We were asked to revitalize central Stamford, Ct, a suburb of New York with a strong financial sector. While the financial sector thrives, other sectors of the economy lag behind both the state and national averages. To diversify the economy, we pinpointed accommodations as a sector that had potential to grow and improve the vibrance of downtown.

We inserted a hospitality and culinary learning institution that will draw students for post secondary education from around the state. The learning institution will supply on-site training for its students with new restaurants, bars and a hotel to help enliven the city at night, while allowing the students to maintain an income while enrolled in school.

There is a surplus of structured parking in downtown, so we are removing 7% of the supply, which will gain us half a million sq feet of space. The new institution is inserted into these partially evacuated parking garages. These garages, with there continuous floor plates, act as interdisciplinary ‘mixing chambers’, where students coalesce socially and academically around libraries, student unions and cafes. The existing structures seed new growth of program as well, which become extensions of the floor plates and takes on a similar formal typology of the garages, ultimately framing a sequence of academic courtyards.
